A fictional resume evidence case

Marketing manager resume example: honest experience gaps

A marketing specialist has spent three years in the role and is considering a manager job that asks for five. The line 'Managed marketing campaigns' gives very little away. The notes reveal six email launches, plus a clear division of work: the director controlled the budget and an agency ran paid search.

Fictional teaching example. The job requirements, resume excerpts, candidate notes, and quantities were created to show the reasoning. This is an editorial worksheet, not a customer result, a live product scan, or a prediction of an employer's decision. Method and limitations.

The job asks for five years. You have three. What belongs on the resume?

Keep the three-year dates and make the email work specific. This candidate can show six launches and the work they owned. They cannot claim five years, paid-search ownership or a campaign budget.

Planned and delivered six email product launches in the first half of 2026, owning the email schedule, audience segmentation, and copy drafts.

Fact record: original lines and added candidate notes

Every fact is fictional. The “Candidate notes” fill in the background for this case. They are not independently verified facts or discoveries made by a model.

M1 · Original resume
Marketing Specialist | October 2023–September 2026
M2 · Original resume
Managed marketing campaigns.
M3 · Original resume
Responsible for campaign reporting and working with sales.
M4 · Candidate note
I worked in this role for three full years. I have no earlier marketing roles, contracts, or internships to add.
M5 · Candidate note
From January through June 2026, I planned and delivered six email product launches. I owned the email schedule, audience segmentation, and copy drafts.
M6 · Candidate note
The director set and allocated the budget. An agency ran paid search. I did not manage the agency or decide paid-media spending.
M7 · Candidate note
I reviewed the weekly email performance reports prepared by our analyst and proposed a subject-line test. I do not have a verified result from that test.
M8 · Candidate note
For the six launches, I briefed a designer and a sales contact and incorporated their feedback into the email copy. Neither reported to me.
M9 · Candidate note
The notes and resume do not contain lead, pipeline, or revenue figures, or a method that links those outcomes to my campaigns.

02 / The evidence decisions

Which requirements the facts can support

These are editorial judgments, not scan results. The numbered links take you back to the exact notes used for each decision. Read those alongside the proposed bullet to check the wording for yourself.

Decision 1 · required

Not evidenced yet

Five or more years of professional marketing experience.

The dates cover three years. M4 also rules out earlier roles, contracts and internships, so this is a confirmed two-year shortfall. If all we had was a short resume, we would need to ask about earlier work before reaching that conclusion.

Source facts:M1M4

No supported rewrite yet

Keep the original employment dates. No wording change closes the two-year gap.

Claims to leave out

  • Five years of marketing experience
  • Three years equivalent to five

The next question or record to check

  • Does the employer state that comparable scope can substitute for the five-year minimum?

Decision 2 · responsibility

Transferable evidence

Own integrated campaigns across paid search and email, including budget allocation.

The six launches give the email work a useful scale. But the director allocated the money and the agency ran paid search. Describe the email schedule, segmentation and copy this candidate owned; the broader campaign decisions belonged to other people.

Source facts:M5M6

Supported wording

Planned and delivered six email product launches in the first half of 2026, owning the email schedule, audience segmentation, and copy drafts.

Place this under the marketing specialist role. M5 supplies the count, period and responsibilities.

Claims to leave out

  • Owned integrated paid and email strategy
  • Managed campaign budgets
  • Directed the paid-search agency

The next question or record to check

  • How much of this job involves paid-search and spending decisions, compared with email delivery?
Link to this decision

Decision 3 · responsibility

Direct evidence

Use campaign reporting to recommend optimizations.

Proposing a subject-line test is a concrete example of using a report to recommend a change. That answers this requirement. The analyst prepared the reports, and the notes give no test result, so the bullet stops at the proposal.

Source facts:M7

Supported wording

Reviewed weekly email performance reports and proposed a subject-line test.

The useful detail is the recommendation. There is no need to attach an unverified improvement percentage.

Claims to leave out

  • Built campaign analytics
  • Improved conversion
  • Increased email revenue

The next question or record to check

  • Was the test run? If so, can you establish its dates, comparison groups, result, and your contribution?

Decision 4 · responsibility

Not evidenced yet

Demonstrate contribution to pipeline or revenue growth.

M9 contains no lead, pipeline or revenue figures and no way to attribute them to these campaigns. The campaigns may have helped the business, but there is no result here that the candidate can put on the resume.

Source facts:M9

No supported rewrite yet

A revenue bullet needs a report and a fair account of the candidate’s contribution. Neither is available here.

Claims to leave out

  • Generated pipeline
  • Drove revenue growth
  • Delivered a revenue uplift percentage

The next question or record to check

  • Is there an approved report tying these launches to pipeline or revenue, and what part of that outcome can you fairly attribute to your work?

Decision 5 · responsibility

Direct evidence

Coordinate campaign delivery with creative and sales partners.

The designer and sales contact did not report to this candidate. Briefing them and working their feedback into the copy still answers the coordination requirement. Those actions are more informative than calling the work team management.

Source facts:M5M8

Supported wording

Coordinated creative and sales input for six email launches, briefing a designer and a sales contact and incorporating their feedback into the copy.

Use if stakeholder coordination is important enough to merit a separate bullet; otherwise combine it with the launch bullet.

Claims to leave out

  • Managed a marketing team
  • Coached direct reports

The next question or record to check

  • Which delivery decisions were yours, and which required approval?

03 / The result and its limits

The email work is clearer. The experience gap is still there.

What changed

The original resume never named a channel or explained what “managed” meant. The revised bullets show six email launches, a subject-line test proposal and coordination with creative and sales.

What is still unresolved

This remains a three-year candidate for a five-year posting. Paid-search and budget decisions sat elsewhere, and there is no verified pipeline or revenue result to add.

A useful next step

Read the application questions before spending more time tailoring. If they ask for five years, answer accurately. Check whether the employer explicitly accepts comparable experience; roles centered on email delivery may fit this record more closely.

Choose a posting and scan your resume to see how the experience you’ve described fits that job. The scan uses AI and can get things wrong. Its score is not an employer’s ATS score or a hiring prediction.
